Mumbai-based education technology startup Lead School has raised $28 Mn in Series C funding round led by WestBridge Capital. The company’s existing investor Elevar Equity has also participated in this round.

The company, which offers integrated curriculum and technology solutions to affordable private schools, is targeting the private school market in tier 2 cities and beyond and will utilize the capital to grow its sales channel and sign up new customers. It will also seek to enhance its technology offerings to help schools better monitor and improve student learning outcomes.

Previously, in 2019, Elevar Equity had infused $7 Mn in Lead School’s Series B round and $1 Mn in Series A funding round in 2017. The Edtech startup is planning to use the latest funding to target more private schools in Tier 2 cities and beyond. Currently, 80-85% of its customers include affordable private schools in Tier 2, 3, and 4 towns.

Lead School was founded in 2012 by Sumeet Mehta and Smita Deorah. It offers integrated curriculum and technology solutions to affordable private schools enabling them to impart better and advanced education.

Lead School has developed its own high-quality learning content for students, teaching resources for teachers, technology integrations for schools to monitor the performance of students, and a platform where parents can monitor their child’s academic performance.

“Affordable schools in small towns are where the problem is. In metros, the teachers are doing a great job. But in small towns, the parent aspiration is high, but teacher skill is low, and that’s the sweet spot where we work,” co-founder and CEO Sumeet Mehta told ET.

The company claims to have grown its network of schools from 150 to 800 in the past one year and expects to maintain the same growth momentum in 2020 as the pandemic has strengthened its position in the market with schools are looking for more options to digitize. “Previously, schools were hesitant to adopt technology, but Covid-19 has shown people that the age-old ways are not going to work,” Mehta added.

“We see great potential in Lead School, given their innovative and focused approach in ensuring accessible, quality school-level education for all,” Sandeep Singhal, managing director of WestBridge Capital said. WestBridge Capital is also an investor in Edtech giant Vedantu.

According to Inc42 Plus, the Indian online learning market is expected to be worth $1.96 Bn by 2021. According to the report, before Covid-19 lockdown, seven out of 10 top Edtech players were focussed on school-level online learning. Vedantu, Learn CBSE, BYJU’S, Toppr, Tiwari Academy, Meritnation and Gradeup collectively captured 51.25% of the traffic share.

GenElek, a New Delhi based health tech startup combines robotics with Artificial Intelligence to manufacture robotic exoskeletons for specially-abled people.

The company was chosen to represent India recently in the Powered Exoskeleton Race at Cybathlon 2020. They were to compete with 17 other international teams and on behalf of GenElek, two former Indian army soldiers from Mohali Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centre were selected to participate in it by wearing the company’s exoskeleton.

The company tailors the exoskeleton equipment based on individual needs and physical features and it aims to help people with paralysis, stroke, and spinal cord injury to have a better life. “The active powered exoskeleton is strapped on to the paralyzed arms and legs, helping the person to stand up from a wheelchair without external support. It helps him/her to sit, stand without dependency, and walk. With training, they can even climb stairs,” says the founder John Ignatius Kujur.

The company also trains the individuals for the first two weeks to get the hang of the artificial exoskeleton. The device was first tried on the two soldiers who were bound to their wheelchairs for a long time and by the third trail they could successfully stand up without anyone’s help.

Notably, the company is India’s first to offer such products by manufacturing them in our homeland and this has proved to be the best alternative for costly abroad devices.

Pixxel, in its first 18 months, has raised the largest seed funding of $5 million with an aim to send Indian satellites into space. This can also be said as the first of its kind investment into this sector from venture capitalists like Lightspeed India and Blume Ventures.

The startup, started by 22-year-old Awais Ahmed and Kshitij Khandelwal, plans to send its first Earth-imaging satellite into space in the month of November. Venture capitalists like GrowX Venture, Inventus Capital India, Stanford Angels, and Ryan Johnson, have also put their contribution into the fundraising.

The space tech startup has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) and letters of intent with big agriculture and oil & gas firms in India and the US, who would bring into use the image data. The capital raised would be brought into use to get the satellites into space and also build its proprietary data platform.

“Satellite has been manufactured and it’s being tested right now. We are working on a second satellite as well, which we plan to fly in the second half of next year,” said Ahmed.

Pixxel would run its operations across Bengaluru and Chennai, moving all its operations to the capital of Karnataka, he added. Ahmed said.  It has two Indian clients and eight more globally, across the US and Europe.

The Space tech, as a sector, has seen an increment in the entrepreneurial action as demand for imaging-tech is seen growing across sectors, and it is getting cheaper to make and launch small satellites.

Currently, there are 15 to 20 startups operating in the space tech sector compared to what it used to be a few years ago, industry executives said. “There are a handful of founders building path-breaking technologies across launch, communication, and satellites —a validation of this is to see Lightspeed invest in Pixxel,” Speciale Invest managing partner Vishesh Rajaram said.

Chennai-based Agnikul prior to this has raised over $3 million in a pre-Series-A round in March from hardcore tech investors Pi Ventures and Speciale Invest. Bengaluru-based Bellatrix last year too raised around $3 million in pre-Series-A funding led by IDFC-Parampara, StartupXseed, and also Bollywood celebrities like Deepika Padukone who were among others.
