2.7 Billion Game Downloads in India During Lockdown

The COVID-19 pandemic has made people shut in their houses due to its rapid spread. Due to that people were restricted from traveling anywhere and this lack of contact with their friends and family has made them turn towards online games. India has a count of 2.7 Billion game downloads since the lockdown began.

India has the highest gaming downloads in the second quarter when compared to the first. India is followed by other large countries like America and Brazil, as per the reports of Sensor Tower. The rise in downloads started by March 7 and has increased by 65% in April.

The Gaming Industry has also witnessed a 10.3% increase in its revenue which earned them $6.6 Billion in the second quarter. PUBG has generated a revenue of $621 Million during the lockdown. The game downloads are reported to be 1.4 Billion in the United States and 1.2 Billion in Brazil in the second quarter.

Apart from this, people are depending upon one form of digital companionship or other during this lockdown. “People are increasingly looking at digital entertainment as a coping mechanism. When you’re playing online or using social media you feel like there’s a virtual partner, and so the lack of socialization, the lack of entertainment elsewhere all are being solved by these virtual interactions,” said Dr. Geetha Narhari when asked about this situation.

The launch of new apps and installments will reach 44.5 Billion on App store and around 139.2 Billion in Google Play by 2024.
