Consumer Protection Act To Protect The Consumer’s Interest In E-Commerce Trades

The newly passed class-action lawsuits for Consumer Protection Act, 2019 will keep an eye on the online seller firms like Amazon and Flipkart from selling damaged and reimbursed goods to the customers.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) will be set up to safeguard consumer rights and any violation of it can be reported here. The CCPA will look into the lawsuits related to it. The act also focuses on advertisements that mislead the buyers and which sell goods that are dangerous and not safe during these COVID times.

CCPA has the power to terminate and ban such advertising companies. The inability of the company to act according to the rules might lead to a penalty of Rs 5 lakhs and three years of prohibition endorsement.

Localcircles, a social media platform conducted a survey in which around 48,000 consumers from 270 districts of India said that due to this act the misleading ads are now decreasing and the companies are taking extra care to avoid packing of damaged goods and are now focusing on providing more efficient service.

“Since such issues have been reported by a number of consumers, per the recently notified Consumer Protection Act 2019, they can potentially file a complaint with the CCPA or the Dept of Consumer Affairs urging them to evaluate this for a class action. If the government implements this well, it can solve a lot of issues related to product defects, service deficiencies, and misleading ads both in the offline and online sectors,” says Sachin Tapria, CEO of Localcircles.
